HISTORY AND MISSION
Walker Home’s Origins:
Introducing approachable luxury®. Everything for the well-appointed home®. Bringing you the world one crate at a time®. For over ten years, our mottos may have changed…but our mission never wavered.
Our passion for collecting has been the cornerstone of a growing business, allowing us to source some of the world's most unique furniture and decorative arts. Today, Walker Home reflects our highly eclectic personal tastes-we try to offer our clients the wide array of styles you would find in our own home. Everyone always says they started small, but in reality Walker Home started tiny, initially working primarily with designers, wholesalers and antique dealers in Asia, Africa, Western Europe and South America. We're now fortunate to expand in exciting new directions, having grown into a retail operation with established warehouses in all parts of the world to furnish our showroom, antique shows, and design events. Luckily, since this began as a hobby, many of the people who helped us get started are still involved-it is indeed a "friends and family" operation. Furthermore, philanthropy and "doing good" in our various communities are part of Walker Home’s mantra; portions of our proceeds benefit worthy causes here in the United States and around the world. By now it's become a cliché that investing in antiques is the ultimate "green" investment, and as we have expanded into contemporary accessories and global craft, we emphasize sustainable "fair trade" vendor relationships.
Antiques: From investment level treasures to introductory pieces, we've become most recognized for our expertise in Asian antiques, having shipped our first crate from Asia in 1998. We specialize in East Asian 17th-19th C. furniture and decorative arts. While we originally exported artifacts exclusively from China, Japan, Korea and Tibet the changing times have allowed us to expand our scope to include Mongolia, Nepal and Bhutan. We personally select everything in our inventory, usually buying directly from families-far from the "tourist traps" filled with cheap reproductions. Our design sensibilities continue to reflect our ever-evolving eclectic tastes, so now we've expanded our export capabilities from Southern Africa, Italy, Eastern Europe and Brazil. We also buy wonderful pieces from estates here in the U.S. and Western Europe-basically, if we love it we'll always try to ship it over for our clients.
Vintage Accents & Contemporary Arts: We always strive to have disparate vintage and contemporary elements in our showroom, thus forging a more dynamic relationship with the antique pieces. In our house, you're likely to find a mid-century painting above a Ming altar with fertility dolls from Burkina Faso and Biedermeier chairs, and we bring this aesthetic to the showroom. We're always on the hunt for esoteric Massimo Pappilardo Italian Deco designs and interesting "lost art" decorative pieces, and we love showcasing them around striking contemporary painting and design. Again, we strive to offer uniqueness in scope and value-we believe a $39,000 Venetian chandelier can coexist with a $39 wine goblet from a contemporary artisan.
"100 Gifts Under $35": Inspired by our love of mixing design elements from all varieties of price points, we launched this program with the belief that great design can be approachable. It's a great way to change your style barometer without a large investment, and can often showcase the best "up and coming" design trends. We scour the world for the hottest design trends, and starting Holiday 2010, we significantly expanded this program and will soon have various elements online for your shopping convenience. Remember, today's up-and-comer is tomorrow’s design guru, so this is always an exciting segment of our inventory.
Shop with confidence: Though we've been in this business for over ten years, we hope to do it for many more, and fully guarantee the authenticity of antiques purchased through Walker Home. Sadly, the Asian market in particular has become flooded with cheap reproductions and fakes, and for too long there was no legal remedy to prevent unauthorized reproductions. To that end, we fully copyright and trademark our well-known "blue cards" with merchandise history and provenance and strictly forbid the unauthorized reproduction of photos (usually used to fashion schlocky reproductions). We provide top-notch research and publish as much information as possible (sometimes directly from families), and very soon this intellectual property will be protected. For over five years, we've worked on a joint agreement/MOU through various universities/foundations (Rutgers University, University of Virginia, Yale University, Peking University/Beida, Kyoto University, Gund Foundation and the International Art & Antiquity Council), the US government (via the State Department), the Chinese government (Chinese External Trade Development Council and Chinese Council on Antiquities) as well as Japanese officials (Japan External Trade Organization, Japanese Decorative Arts Council, Japan Foundation, Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry). Upon approval, we will be one of only a handful of dealers in the world explicitly authorized to deal in Asian cultural artifacts that were exported from Asia prior to WWII, and we’ll have the blessings of these countries to export certain artifacts into perpetuity. Most importantly, we will have the working legal framework to discourage any reproductions of pieces we carry. For us, this long-awaited endeavor is of paramount importance, and helps us build a relationship of trust with our clients.
Thank you for your support over the years as we've grown-best wishes, and happy browsing!
