Spectacular mid-19th century Provincial Chinese Wedding Bed circa 1850. Rare ebony finish with intricately carved entablatures and hardened rattan. The upper perimeter of the bed is decorated with a carved open lattice pattern; the top has an open wood frame with a large trefoil design. The front opening is flanked by two panels with carved fu dogs surrounded by a floral motif. The upper overhang features six expertly carved panels with an openwork floral design, three of which are decorated with birds, which surmount an open scroll/floral motif. Overall, this bed represents a confluence of design aesthetics only found in the furniture of the most well-traveled families during this era--a mix of Manchurian, Mongolian, Japanese, Korean and even Russian influences. This bed represents the "dowry" given after the marriage of a wealthy provincial couple. All original detail, will fit standard full/double mattress. Note provincial beds often did not have mattresses unlike their imperial counterparts. Very sturdy and suitable for daily use. Measures 89.5w x 51.5d x 95"h.
